Albert Ayler—“All Love”

The Last Album (Impulse! 1969).

Here is one of the ‘regular (free) jazz songs’ on the last record Albert recorded before he died (well), which is rounded out by gloriously fucked up experiments in vocal jazz, blues rock, and bag-piping.

Pretty, bittersweet fluttering over sawing drones in a late-Coltrane/70s Alice mode here. Bobby Few’s piano goes in for some needling modernism to counterbalance his own majestic chord runs underneath Ayler but alongside drummer Muhammad Ali’s disjointed clopping. A keeper.
