It was probably a moot point because by the time we got to the Ali duo cuts it was all or nothing — you either bought John Coltrane’s “difficult” music and stood for it with an evangelist’s zeal or you didn’t. Well, maybe less a moot point than a missed one; what Rashied Ali did wasn’t so much clattering energy music or the pure noise that it might’ve been cracked up to be, and certainly not the found art, alien creature first discovering a trap kit skittering he would influence.
