Okay, so this is odd. From the 1970 lp Louis Armstrong and His Friends, which also includes “an unlikely ‘We Are the World’-type vocal chorus that includes Ornette Coleman, Tony Bennett, and Miles Davis” on “We Shall Overcome,” here is Pops trading fours on Pharoah Sanders’ hippie free jazz proto-loft jazz freak-out hit “The Creator Has a Master Plan” with Leon Thomas, the dude who wrote and chanted the lyrics in the first place.

And the thing is, as the Destination: Out! folks contend, it actually works! Like, well. Old Louis’ haggard, world-weary gravel pit rasp intoning the simple to the point of stoopid mantra gives it a smoke-tinged real world knowledge that the squarely optimistic, hippie-dippy original lacked. Plus, the Oliver Nelson arrangement plays well to the fact that the song has always had a subtle but insistent nice hard beat in the back of it, which always made the thing work anyway.

Now somebody go back in time and make Dinah Washington do “Blase.”
